- Sapwood Color: The sapwood color is yellowish white.
- Heartwood Color: The heartwood is generally deep red or pale reddish-brown, and may occasionally have a greenish golden beige ribbon figure.
- Grain: The grain is straight, sometimes slightly interlocked.
- Texture: The wood is fine textured.
- Natural Durability: The wood is resistant to attack by decay-causing organisms, termites, and dry wood insects.
- Working Characteristics: The wood is exceedingly hard. Very sharp carbide tools are recommended.
- Polishing: Polishes very well.
- Strength: Extremely durable. High crushing and bending strength. Medium stiffness and resistance to shock, but some pieces tend to splinter.
